The owners of this mid-century ranch-style house in South Austin needed more space for their growing family, so they commissioned this modern, ground-up addition. The new wing was sited perpendicular to the south face of the existing house; this offered convenient access to the new half bath and utility closet while assuring privacy for the owners in their new master suite. Two elements helped establish continuity between the old and new structures: the first was the expanded deck, accessible from the new bedroom via large sliding glass doors, and the second was the flat roof, which wrapped around the existing house and expanded the size of the carport. Because the structure pressed so closely to the property line, it was important to let in as much light as possible. A cutout in the roof allows the morning sun to filter through the bamboo outside the bedroom windows, Solatubes illuminate secondary spaces, and openings on every facade flood the expansion with light.
