Storage is one of the most sought-after commodities in N.Y.C., and this two-story duplex’s lack of it invited creative space-finding solutions. In the living and dining area upstairs, a floor-to-ceiling custom millwork piece acts as a catch-all for books, media equipment, and bric-a-brac. The unit slips past the corner of the wall to create a vestibule and shield the bedroom and bathroom doors from the living area. Downstairs, a wing wall added across from the laundry closet and half-bath provides visual separation from the den. A second floating storage credenza furnishes more space without encroaching on the narrow room. The millwork is a mix of American walnut and solid wood painted with a white lacquer-like finish.
